History

Club Thirroul has been an integral part of the Northern Illawarra community since 1933. What began as a gathering place for local lawn bowlers has grown over more than nine decades into one of Thirroul’s most loved and welcoming community hubs.

From our early days with a simple clubhouse and green, the club has evolved alongside the town, expanding our facilities, enhancing dining and entertainment experiences, and becoming a social centre where friends and families come together for celebrations, events, activities and good times.

Through all seasons, Club Thirroul has remained true to its roots, a place for connection, fun, and community spirit. Today, we’re proud to offer everything from vibrant social events and barefoot bowls to quality dining and spacious event facilities, all while continuing to support and reflect the heart of Thirroul life.

Amalgamation

Following an Expression of Interest (EOI) campaign in early 2020, the Board engaged in discussions with Ryde-Eastwood Leagues Club to explore the potential for amalgamation. Both clubs shared their vision, values, and commitment to integrity, community, and member engagement, demonstrating a strong alignment with what we hold dear at Club Thirroul.

After careful consideration — particularly in light of our financial position and the challenges of the COVID-19 period — the Board unanimously resolved to pursue amalgamation with Ryde-Eastwood. The next step involved a thorough due diligence process, engaging independent parties to ensure that all aspects were carefully reviewed and that both clubs had a clear understanding of what would be required to make the amalgamation successful for members and the club’s long-term future.

Once due diligence was complete, a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) was prepared, outlining the terms of the amalgamation. The MOU was then presented to the members of both clubs at a general meeting, where it was approved, formalising the partnership.

This amalgamation has enabled Club Thirroul to continue its proud tradition of supporting the local sporting community, providing facilities and opportunities for clubs, teams, and young athletes, while expanding social, cultural, and recreational offerings for our members. It has strengthened our financial foundation and ensures we can continue to be a vibrant hub for the Thirroul community, delivering high-quality events, activities, and services for many years to come.
